New Delhi, Nov 26 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in celebrations as India was officially awarded the hosting rights of the 2030 Commonwealth Games and Ahmedabad (Ahmedabad) was declared the host city. This historic announcement was made during the General Assembly of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) in Glasgow on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Modi took the initiative to congratulate the country for the achievement, posting on Twitter: “Delighted that India has won the bid to host the Centenary Commonwealth Games 2030! Congratulations to the people and sports ecosystem of India. It is our collective commitment and sportsmanship that has placed India firmly on the global sporting map.”

The post mentioned, “With the ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, we look forward to celebrating these historic games with great enthusiasm. We look forward to welcoming the world!”

Marking India’s return as host of the Quadrangular Games after 20 years, the historic celebration was held at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) organized a special function in the capital, which was attended by Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, senior representatives of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Secretary (Sports) and top officials of MYAS and SAI. Olympians, Commonwealth medal winners and sporting icons were also present, symbolizing India’s growing sporting resurgence.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Mandaviya described that day as historical. “Hosting the Commonwealth Games in its 100th year in 2030 is important for the CGF and us as hosts. Under the Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India’s sporting landscape is transforming. Hosting the Boxing World Cup, Hockey World Cup, World Para Athletics and other events shows that we are ready to host international competitions of the highest level.”

“We are also getting ready to host the 2029 World Police Games, and all this will lead to our preparations for the 2036 Olympic Games, which we look forward to hosting. The Khelo India Policy and the Sports Administration Act are also going to drive our transformation and the improvement of Indian sports. In the next 10 years, India will be in the top 10, and by 2047, we will be in the top 5. I urge all athletes now to get ready to make the country I am proud,” the Union Minister said.

Dr Mandaviya also highlighted the world’s growing confidence in India’s hosting capacity, citing recent praise from international leaders including World Para Athletics President Paul Fitzgerald, World Boxing President Boris Van der Vorst and Cuban Olympic legend Javier Sotomayor. He said, “Such recognition reinforces what the world already feels: India is ready. India is capable. India has arrived.”

“This decision confirms that the world’s most populous nation will host the historic edition of the Games, after representatives of 74 Commonwealth Member States and Territories ratified India’s bid at the Commonwealth Games General Assembly in Glasgow,” a CGF official statement earlier in the day had said.

“India has presented a compelling vision for the 2030 Games, centered in the Gujarat city of Ahmedabad (Ahmedabad), which will build on the foundation laid by Glasgow 2026, enabling India to celebrate the centenary in style,” the statement said.

A specially prepared audio-visual film was screened at the ceremony held in New Delhi on Wednesday evening, showcasing India’s Commonwealth Games legacy from medal achievements to hosting the 2010 edition. The announcement was followed by a spectacular laser show and fireworks, culminating with the unveiling of the official hashtag #CWG2030InBHARAT, representing India’s ambition and vision towards Developed India 2047. In keeping with India’s motto of sustainability in hosting large-scale sporting events, the firecrackers used at the event were eco-friendly green crackers, which are non-polluting.

Ahmedabad is the second Indian and third Asian city to host the Commonwealth Games 2030.
