After protesting students demanding declaration of Senate elections called for a complete shutdown of Panjab University on November 26, the university authorities have declared a holiday on Wednesday (November 26).

The authorities have announced closure of all teaching, non-teaching and office activities on the campus on Wednesday (November 26).

Also, the examinations to be held on Wednesday (November 26) in the Panjab University (PU) campus have also been postponed.

A statement from PU said, “This is for the information of the public in general and students in particular that the examinations scheduled to be held on November 26, 2025 at the examination centers CHD40, CHD41, CHD43 and CHD44 located at PU Campus, Sector 14 and shifted to DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh, have been postponed. The new dates for conducting these examinations will be notified later. Will go.”

Earlier, university officials had said that November 26 will be a working day and all teachers and department heads will have to be present in their respective departments from 9 am to 5 pm.

On Monday (November 24), PU Vice-Chancellor Renu Vig urged faculty members to counsel students who may attempt to disrupt the exams, saying that while protesters have a democratic right to express dissent, students who want to appear for the exams have an equal right to do so without any hindrance.

PU students under the banner of Panjab University Bachao Morcha have called for a complete shutdown of the university on Wednesday (November 26) to put pressure on the schedule of Senate elections.

He has warned of closing gate numbers 1 and 2.

On 10 November, students held massive protests, with agitators storming the university entrances and scuffling with security personnel.

The initial phase of the protest was launched against the Centre’s decision to reconstitute the governing bodies of Panjab University – the Senate and the Syndicate.

However, following mounting pressure from various political leaders and students, the Education Ministry on 7 November withdrew its 28 October notification to change the constitution and composition of the Panjab University Senate and Syndicate.

However, the students refused to end their agitation demanding announcement of the schedule for the Senate elections, which have not been held for over a year.

Representatives of Panjab University students had earlier met the Vice Chancellor, who said that the Senate election schedule had been sent to the Chancellor, who is the Vice President of the country, for approval.

However, the protesting students said their protest would continue until their main demand – the Senate election schedule – was announced.

Many political parties of Punjab, including Aam Aadmi Party, Shiromani Akali Dal, Congress and farmer organizations like Sanyukt Kisan Morcha, SKM (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Morcha had extended their support to the students’ movement.
