According to Chellani, China keeps increasing the pressure because India responds only with official protest. He says China has used similar tactics in the past – issuing stapled visas, blocking athletes from entering the country and taking administrative steps to challenge India’s position.
Chellaney feels India should consider stronger steps like issuing stapled visas to Chinese citizens from Tibet, so that Beijing understands the cost of such behaviour.
Trigunayat says India’s sovereignty cannot be compromised, and unless India gives the same level of inconvenience to China, such incidents will continue to happen. At the same time, he said that both countries still want stable economic relations, which makes the situation more complex.
The incident they are referring to took place at the Shanghai airport, where an Indian woman Arunachal Pradesh Kept in custody for about 18 hours. She says Chinese officials mocked her Indian passport, told her Arunachal was “Chinese territory” and even asked her to apply for a Chinese passport.
She was only passing through China on her way to Japan, but was nevertheless pulled aside and interrogated. The Indian Consulate intervened, but China later defended its officials by saying they followed “rules and laws”.
