Southern California residents are mourning police dog The K9, named Spike, was killed during a lengthy armed standoff on Saturday.

Spike, four year old boy Belgian Malinois Joe, who had been on the force for two years, was killed during a traffic stop that turned into a standoff.
While stopping on Buena Vista Street that evening, near interstate 5Police say a suspect jumped out of his car, ran onto a freeway ramp, and hid from officers in a nearby residential area.
Multiple police departments and a SWAT team joined the search, which lasted several hours.
During the standoff, police dispatched Spike to search for the suspect, and the man shot the dog, which ran back to its handlers and was later pronounced dead at an emergency veterinarian.
“Multiple attempts were made to communicate and negotiate with the suspect, encouraging him to surrender peacefully,” Burbank police wrote in a statement. “Officers established containment and deployed less lethal systems in an effort to induce him to surrender.
“During these efforts, the suspect began firing at police officers, striking police vehicles parked near the scene,” the statement continues. “Officers returned fire and killed the suspect. He was pronounced dead at the scene.”
Police have not released the identity of the person killed.

A memorial to Spike was soon erected outside the department.
“It’s just sad because this is where I grew up,” said Burbank resident Susanna. told NBC Los Angeles. “I have a lot of respect for the Burbank Police Department. Sorry to get emotional, but they protect us. And for the K-9 as well, he was just doing his job.”
