In a significant step forward for the Indian Navy’s efforts towards self-reliance in defense manufacturing, India has commissioned INS Mahe, the first of eight indigenous anti-submarine warfare ships. Built at a cost of over ₹700 crore by Cochin Shipyard Limited, INS Mahe is designed for high-speed, high-precision anti-submarine warfare operations in both deep and shallow waters. Here’s a look at some of its key features.
1. INS Mahe, the first of the Mahe class anti-submarine warfare ships, has been commissioned into the Indian Navy’s Western Fleet.
2. Built with over 80% indigenous content, INS Mahe demonstrates India’s growing self-reliance in advanced naval shipbuilding and defense systems.
3. INS Mahe, the submarine hunter built by Cochin Shipyard, spans over 70 meters and is designed for high speed, shallow water and deep water operations.
4. INS Mahe’s Anti-Torpedo Decoy System (ATDS), mounted on its upper deck, consists of two six-barreled launchers. The ATDS launchers detect and engage any torpedo targeted at INS Mahe.
5. Triple-tube torpedo launchers are the ship’s defense system. These indigenous torpedo launchers enable INS Mahe to conduct precision surface to subsurface strikes.
6. Super Rapid Gun Mounts (SRGM), installed on both sides of the ship, enable powerful surface-to-surface warfare capability.
7. INS Mahe has an indigenous 12-barrel rocket launcher designed for surface-to-sub-surface attack and destruction of enemy submarines.
8. With a speed of approximately 25 knots and a range of approximately 1,800 nautical miles, INS Mahe is designed for agility, endurance and tactical dominance. The secrecy of the ship is its major strength.
9. The spire of the ship is the Urumi, a traditional three-bladed flexible sword from the ancient martial art of Kerala Kalaripayattu, which symbolizes agility, accuracy and lethal power. (Image: Indian Navy)
10. India’s new Mahe-class and Arnala-class ships together form a significant counter to Pakistan’s upcoming Hangar-class submarines.
