A Tejas fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed in a ball of fire during an air display at the Dubai Air Show on November 21, killing the sole pilot. This is the second accident involving an indigenous multi-role light combat aircraft in less than two years.
Wing Commander Sayal was in his mid-30s and was a resident of Himachal Pradesh.
Video footage of the crash showed the jet suddenly falling from altitude after a low-altitude maneuver and then plunging into the ground within seconds before engulfing it in a ball of fire. Black smoke billowed over Dubai World Central’s Al Maktoum International Airport.
The single-engine light aircraft crashed at 2:10 pm local time (3.40 pm IST) after flying over the iconic air show venue in Dubai during a demonstration flight. Tejas’ aerial display was to last for eight minutes.
The Dubai Air Show is a biennial event held in the United Arab Emirates, and features both flying and static displays. The last accident involving Tejas took place in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan in March 2024 but the pilot ejected safely.
