Umaria, Nov 23 (IANS) One person was killed and 12 others were injured in a road accident in Madhya Pradesh’s Umaria district on Sunday morning, spreading shock and outrage in the area.
The accident occurred near Barambaba temple under Chandia police station area when a tourist vehicle carrying visitors from Kolkata collided with a parked truck at around 5.30 pm on Sunday.
The tourists were returning from a safari in the famous Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve and were on their way to Khajuraho when the collision occurred.
Eyewitnesses said the speeding vehicle lost control and collided with a parked truck, resulting in a massive collision.
The collision was so severe that one female passenger died on the spot, while 12 others suffered serious to moderate injuries.
Local residents reached the spot, informed the police and helped get the injured admitted to the district hospital in Umaria, where emergency treatment is being conducted.
As soon as the information was received, the police of Chandia police station reached the spot and started rescue operations.
The injured include men, women and possibly children, who are undergoing treatment at Umaria District Hospital.
Doctors have described the condition of some as serious.
Preliminary investigation suggests that speeding or driver error may have caused the accident, although detailed investigation is underway.
The parked truck was reportedly parked on the roadside without proper reflectors or warning signs, raising questions over road safety on this popular tourist route.
However, the police have not yet identified the victims. A case has been registered and the police have seized both the vehicles. The body of the deceased woman has been sent for post-mortem.
The incident has sparked anger among people over the frequent accidents on the Umaria-Katni-Khajuraho stretch, which is a major corridor for tourists visiting the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve. Local residents and activists have demanded better enforcement of traffic rules, removal of illegally parked heavy vehicles and better signage.
