Jammu, Nov 22 (IANS) Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district police on Saturday said it has seized property worth Rs 60 lakh of a drug smuggler in Poonch district.

“In a decisive action against the narco-terror ecosystem, Police Station Surankote has seized a residential house of notorious drug smuggler Sajjad Hussain Shah, son of Sarfaraz Hussain Shah, resident of Potha, Tehsil Surankote,” a police statement said on Saturday.

“The property, valued at approximately Rs 60 lakh, has been seized/frozen under the provisions of the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators (Forfeiture of Assets) Act – SAFEMA. The said person is a habitual offender and has been involved in several NDPS cases in the district. “He is currently lodged in District Jail Udhampur under PIT-NDPS proceedings.”

The statement noted that the attachment of their illegally acquired assets is a part of a sustained crackdown on drug traffickers operating in the region.

“The District Police Poonch has been carrying out relentless action against the narcotics network and in recent months, have seized assets worth several crores of rupees of drug smugglers and their associates. Additionally, several bank accounts with suspicious and disproportionate transactions have been frozen as part of a financial investigation aimed at dismantling the support system of the drug trade.”

The police statement also said that “Poonch Police reaffirms its commitment to ensure a drug-free society and urges the public to continue sharing information related to drug trafficking and related criminal activities”.

Jammu and Kashmir Police and security forces are carrying out aggressive operations against terrorists, their on-ground workers (OGWs), supporters, drug smugglers and people involved in hawala money racket and other illegal activities.

It is believed that the money generated from these illegal activities is ultimately used to fund terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.

The revised strategy is part of coordinated efforts to eliminate the entire ecosystem of terror instead of focusing only on eliminating gun-toting terrorists.
