Lucknow, Nov 22 (IANS) Amid polarized discussion and debate over infiltrators during the Bihar elections, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced a clear ‘roadmap’ to drive them out, thereby depriving them of any direct or indirect role in the country’s democratic and electoral process. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday directed District Magistrates (DMs) to take prompt and strict action against infiltrators and illegal immigrants living illegally in the state. According to a government statement, district magistrates have been asked to identify illegal immigrants living illegally in 75 districts of the state and keep them in temporary detention facilities until they are evicted as per the legal process. Law and order, national security and social harmony should be given priority over everything, and there should be no compromise with any illegal activity – this was the message CM Yogi gave to the district magistrates. All district administrations have been directed to identify illegal immigrants living in their areas and then take action as per law. “The Chief Minister has also directed to set up temporary detention centers in each district to house the identified infiltrators,” a government release said. The move to expel infiltrators and infiltrators from the state reiterates the Yogi government’s policy of zero tolerance towards ‘outsiders’, which includes Bangladeshi, Pakistani nationals as well as Rohingya Muslims. According to some estimates, there are more than 15 million illegal immigrants currently living in the country. In a similar operation earlier this year, the Uttar Pradesh Police had launched a drive to ‘identify and isolate’ suspected illegal immigrants living in the state with false and fake identity cards. As the Chief Minister’s directions come in the backdrop of the voter purge campaign by the Election Commission, the issue has turned into a major political controversy, which has been strongly opposed by the opposition parties. –IANS Mr/UK
