Indian Railways has said it will take action after a video circulating online shows a woman making instant noodles and tea in an electric kettle during a train journey.
The clip, filmed by the woman herself and spoken in Marathi – a language widely used in the western Indian state Maharashtra – Maggi, a popular brand of instant noodles, is shown boiling inside a kettle, while a cup of tea is placed next to it.
The woman tells viewers that she has given a “ready-made breakfast” to the passenger next to her and adds: “What I mean to say is, I’m not even on holiday here. My kitchen is still working.” The woman also claims that she has made tea for about 15 people in a single kettle.
The train by which she was traveling has not been identified. The sockets available in Indian trains are usually for low-power appliances such as phone chargers rather than cooking appliances.
The footage was widely criticized on social media, with users accusing the woman of endangering the safety of other passengers. Many reported that drawing high wattage from the cabin socket could overload the circuit or cause a spark, creating a potential fire hazard.
Central Railways – one of the zones of Indian Railways responsible for operations in Maharashtra and neighboring regions – said it has initiated action in response to the video.
“Action is being initiated against the channel and the person concerned,” Joanne, formerly of X, wrote on Twitter.
It warned that the use of electric kettles is banned onboard as “it may lead to fire incidents and may also be disastrous for other passengers. It may also cause disruption in power supply in the train and malfunction of AC and other electronic ports.”
Officials urged passengers to report similar incidents to onboard staff and avoid carrying or using devices that draw more power than the system is designed to handle.
