Patna: A notorious criminal was injured and arrested in an encounter with police in Bihar’s Begusarai district.
With the formation of the new government in Bihar, police action against criminal activities has intensified.
Wanted criminal Shivdutt Rai was injured during the firing on Friday night in a joint operation conducted by the Special Task Force (STF) and the district police.
The encounter took place between Shaligram and Malhipur villages of Sahebpur Kamal police station area.
The accused, Shivdutt Rai, 27-year-old son of Rajkishore Rai, resident of Banhara of Teghra police station area, was undergoing treatment in police custody.
According to sources, STF had received information that the absconding criminal was planning to buy weapons in Malhipur area.
Taking prompt action, the STF team reached the spot and also alerted the local police.
As soon as the joint team arrived, six criminals riding on two motorcycles started firing.
The police retaliated in self-defence, during which Shivdutt Rai fell on the ground after being shot in the thigh.
Taking advantage of the darkness, his companions managed to escape.
During interrogation, Rai provided information which led the police to recover a cache of weapons and cash from a house.
However, the police have not yet released any official statement regarding the seizure or details of the operation.
Rai is the main accused in the attack on the residence of Sarpanch Meena Devi of Dhankaul Panchayat of Teghra police station area on September 2, 2022.
Meena Devi’s younger son Avnish Kumar was murdered, while the elder son Rajneesh was injured while resisting the robbery attempt.
After that incident, a named FIR was registered against Shivdutt and his gang members.
This encounter is the first major police action after Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary took charge of the Home Department.
The portfolio allocation was finalized a day earlier.
Samrat Chaudhary had repeatedly warned that under his charge, “criminals would either be in jail or in the crematorium”.
With this operation in Begusarai, the police seems to be taking swift action in line with the strict stance taken by the State Home Minister on crime.
