European countries see their future at stake in Ukraine’s fight to defeat Russia and have insisted on consultation in peace efforts. On Saturday, they were preparing to meet on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, to lend support to Kiev.
The planned talks were announced by top EU officials, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Council President Antonio Costa, following their talks with Zelensky on Friday.
Earlier that day, von der Leyen said a key principle for Kiev’s European allies is “there is nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine.”
The US plan calls for Ukraine to cede territory to Russia – which Kiev has repeatedly rejected – while reducing the size of its military and blocking its coveted path to NATO membership. This includes many of Moscow’s long-standing demands, while offering limited security guarantees to Kiev.
Elsewhere, a nighttime Ukrainian drone strike hit a fuel refinery in southern Russia, killing two people and wounding two others, a local official said. The attack on the Samara region is one of Kiev’s latest long-range attacks against Russian oil infrastructure, which it says fuels the Kremlin’s war in Ukraine.
Regional governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev did not immediately name the site that was targeted, or provide details of any damage. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine.
Russian air defenses shot down 69 Ukrainian drones over Russia and annexed Crimea overnight, including 15 drones flying over Samara province, according to the Defense Ministry in Moscow. The nighttime attacks caused at least five Russian airports to temporarily halt or restrict operations and cut power to about 3,000 homes in the southern city of Rylsk, according to Russian officials.
