Kolkata, Nov 21 (IANS) Trinamool Congress has called a virtual organizational meeting on Monday to discuss the party’s strategies regarding the ongoing Special Intensive Review (SIR) by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in West Bengal.
The meeting will be presided over by Trinamool Congress general secretary and party’s Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee.
All elected party MPs and MLAs, state cabinet members, heads of municipal bodies, district presidents and party presidents as well as mass organizations associated with Trinamool have been asked to attend the meeting.
“Apart from discussing the party’s strategy on the SIT, the performance of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members and MLAs as elected public representatives is also likely to be reviewed in the meeting on Monday,” said a member of the West Bengal cabinet, declining to be named.
He also said that incidents of infighting within the party from some districts may also be discussed at Monday’s meeting and is expected to issue a strong note of warning to the party general secretary to those district level leaders who are engaged in or promoting infighting.
It is learned that at the meeting, the party general secretary is expected to decide guidelines for organizing protest movements in the districts over incidents of suicide and suicide attempts due to fear of SIR, or death of booth level officers (BLOs) or falling ill due to revision exercise workload.
On Thursday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had written a letter to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar asking him to postpone the revision process.
In the letter, he had claimed that the manner in which the process was imposed on electoral officials and citizens of the state was “unplanned, chaotic and dangerous”.
On Thursday, Leader of the Opposition (LOP) in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari also wrote a letter to the CEC opposing the Chief Minister’s letter.
In its letter, the LOP claimed that CM Banerjee’s letter to the CEC was a desperate attempt to thwart the voter list purification drive through SIR, and the contents of her letter were politically motivated and factually incorrect.
