The chairman of BBC Children in Need has resigned just weeks after being sentenced over a collision with a cyclist.

Terence Duddy, known as Terry, hit a cyclist with his BMW car in Chalfont St Giles, buckinghamshireOn June 21, she was seriously injured when she fell off her bike on the road.

Duddy started the role bbc charity on October 21, but has now resigned after pleading guilty to causing serious injury by careless and imprudent driving.

Thames Valley Police said the incident had a “life-changing impact” on the woman, who is in her fifties. When Duddy turned right from the high road and collided with it, he had the right of way.

The force said Duddy, 69, of Chalfont St Giles sentenced to eight months’ detentionSuspended for 18 months, 200 hours unpaid work, costs totaling £272 and 18-month driving disqualification on November 13.

In a statement, BBC Children in Need said: “On Tuesday 18 November, our new Chairman Terry Duddy informed us that he had been convicted last week of careless driving causing serious injury.

“In light of this he offered his resignation, which was accepted by the board, recognizing that he could not continue in this role.”

The charity said James Fairclough, who has been a trustee since 2021, has replaced him as chairman.

“We are focused on helping children and youth thrive,” the statement said.

Duddy joined the board of trustees of Children in Need as chairman on October 21. When she was appointed, the charity said Duddy “brings a wealth of administration and leadership experience in both the charity and commercial sectors, along with a strong commitment to supporting children and young people”.

Children in Need raises over £45 million Friday after its annual appeal show.
