Bengaluru, Nov 20 (IANS) The Karnataka BJP unit on Thursday attacked the Congress-led state government over a broad daylight robbery of Rs 7.11 crore, alleging that the state has become a safe haven for robbers.

Speaking at a press conference at his office in Bengaluru’s Vidhana Soudha, Leader of Opposition and senior BJP leader R. Ashok said, another face of “Brand Bengaluru” is emerging – Bengaluru is becoming a city of robberies. I criticized that on Wednesday (November 19), a robbery of Rs 7.11 crore took place in Bengaluru in just seven minutes.

Taking aim at the Congress-led state government in Karnataka, BJP leader Ashok said, “This is a new scheme of the Karnataka government; it is like their five guarantees. The government has now shown people how to get Rs 7 crore in seven minutes. People are living in fear, and the situation is such that they are afraid to even go to banks.”

Asking the Karnataka government whether such a huge robbery is possible in broad daylight, the opposition leader said: “There are more than one lakh CCTV cameras in Bengaluru, and more than one lakh policemen. The commissioner’s office and residence, the DGP’s office and residence are all here. The chief minister’s residence, the residence of the special officer and the house of Bengaluru in-charge minister DK Shivakumar are also here. On one hand, Congress leaders are indulging in broad daylight robbery and corruption.” And there’s actual daylight here.” Robberies are being carried out on the streets by dacoits, it all seems like a strange coincidence.”

He also commented, “It happened exactly at the tunnel passage point near (Deputy Chief Minister) DK Shivakumar’s residence. This also seems like a coincidence. Karnataka has become a haven for robbers.”

BJP leader Ashok said, “After Bidar and Mangaluru, now the thieves have come to Bengaluru. As if to show their skills, they have displayed it in the capital city. People have realized that the state government is as good as dead.”

He said, “If the state government and the police had created any fear, if there was a fear of being shot or punished for committing robbery, they (thieves) would not have dared to do it. Due to the power tussle over the cabinet reshuffle in Karnataka, the entire focus of the ministers and the chief minister is on Delhi. Law and order has completely deteriorated, it is dead.”

He demanded from the Karnataka government, saying, “They (state government) should arrest the culprits within 24 hours. They have said that they already have clues. It has been 26 hours since the robbery took place. If all the clues are available, why have they not arrested anyone yet?”

He said, “Law and order has completely broken down in Karnataka. Robbers and thieves have no fear of the police. This has created concern among the people about how safe are the banks of Bengaluru. If criminals can get away with a robbery in broad daylight, it shows the seriousness of the situation.”

BJP leader Ashok alleged, “The police department has failed in many cases, such as the stampede during Royal Challengers Bangalore’s IPL win celebrations and the Dharmasthala incident. Because Congress leaders are fighting for power and have moved to Delhi, there is no control on the police department. Public work is not being done anywhere because of the commission system in every department.”

He said, “Congress leaders have become promise breakers. Deputy CM DK Shivakumar has indirectly said that CM Siddaramaiah is a Chief Minister under mercy. He has said that he will resign from the post of state party president. CM Siddaramaiah has boldly said that he will not leave the post of CM. In another month, a clear picture of this posturing will be known.”

BJP leader Ashok said, “Development activities are not taking place in the schools. There is a lack of basic facilities, no classrooms and teachers have not been appointed. In such a situation, instead of taking the schools towards development, the maximum passing marks have been reduced. In this way, more students are shown passing. This will not benefit the students. This measure will not take the education sector forward. I would request the Speaker of the Assembly to discuss it in the session.”
