Kolkata, Nov 20 (IANS) Police on Thursday said they have arrested a lawyer in connection with the suicide of a law student in Kakdweep town of South 24 Parganas district.
According to police sources, lawyer Sheikh Manowar Alam has been arrested by the officers of Kakdweep Police Station from Hyderabad.
On November 12, the body of law college student Sonia Halder was found hanging in the chamber of the said lawyer. It was also revealed that the police recovered a love letter and on the basis of that letter, the family of the deceased lodged a complaint at the Kakdweep police station against the lawyer for abetting the woman to commit suicide.
After investigation, Kakdweep police eventually arrested the lawyer. It has also been revealed that the lawyer was the vice president of Trinamool Law Cell of Kakdweep Court.
A senior officer of Sundarban police district said, “Based on the complaint lodged by the family members of the deceased law student, investigation into the case has been initiated. The accused lawyer is being searched. He has been arrested from Hyderabad, where he had fled after the body of the law student was found in his chamber. Further investigation in the case is underway.”
According to the police, the deceased is a first year student of a law college. His house is in Gandhinagar area of Kakdweep. According to family sources, the student used to go to the local lawyer’s chamber daily for practice during her studies.
The family of the deceased told that the student had left the house as usual on the morning of 12th November. However, in the evening he received news that his body was found hanging in the lawyer’s chamber. The family informed the police. The officers went to the lawyer’s chambers and recovered the body.
According to police sources, a bag was recovered from the spot which contained a love letter. The family alleged that it is clear from the letter that the lawyer had a close relationship with the deceased and due to tension in the relationship, he committed suicide. The family later lodged a written complaint against the lawyer at the Kakdweep police station.
