New Delhi, Nov 20 (IANS) Congress MP Imran Masood and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti have strongly criticized the BJP after they commented on the viral video of Delhi blasts accused Dr Omar Muhammad in which he attempted to justify suicide attacks as “martyrdom operations – as it is known in Islam”.

Masood refuted the claim, saying that suicide attacks are “haram” in Islam and argued that Omar carried out the car blast at the Red Fort only because he was a “misguided youth”.

Mufti said the video has disturbed her personally as a Kashmiri and forced her to consider the deepening cycle of violence, repression and alienation, warning that the scenes point to broader social fractures that the nation continues to ignore. He said that even though “right-wing groups promote such videos”, the underlying problems are not addressed by the authorities.

The remarks drew a sharp reaction from the BJP, which accused the two leaders of trying to “justify” the attack that left at least 13 people dead and several others injured.

Criticizing the leaders, BJP national spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told IANS, “There are some proxy groups in Pakistan, which constantly associate themselves with Pakistan and Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. Whenever action is taken against terrorists, their restlessness and ‘pain’ become evident. Whenever Karachi suffers damage, these people here also appear ‘wounded’ and restless. That is why they are always in sync.”

He said, “You must understand that whenever our security forces have held terrorists and their masters to account for their crimes and atrocities, Pakistan has been asking for ‘evidence’. This combination of ‘evidence and questions’ is nothing new for them. It is part of their long-term strategy.”

BJP leader Pratul Shah Dev also condemned Mufti and Masood’s comments, saying, “They should be ashamed. He (Omar) is a terrorist, not a misguided youth. If you are calling such terrorists ‘misguided youth’, then I don’t think this country is the right place for you. If you want to show him the ‘right path’, you should take him to Pakistan.”

Samajwadi Party distanced itself from the statements of Masood and Mufti and stressed that political parties should maintain unity against terrorism.

SP spokesperson Abbas Haider told IANS, “Irrespective of political party, I believe there should not be unnecessary rhetoric on such issues. One thing is clear that all 140 crore citizens of our country, irrespective of religion or community, are united against terrorism.”

He said, “Everyone wants terrorism to be rooted out, which our government has completely failed to achieve. Nevertheless, we stand firmly with our government on the issue of terrorism and finding ways to eliminate it.”
