Kolkata, Nov 20 (IANS) Kolkata Police has arrested three people from Gujarat in connection with a year-old cyber fraud case in which an elderly woman in the city was duped of Rs 78 lakh, officials said on Thursday.
The fraudsters had posed as Mumbai Police officers and pressurized the victim to make payment and alleged that he had sent a parcel containing drugs to a person in Mumbai through courier.
The complainant has been identified as 61-year-old Dipanvita Dhar. She is a resident of Maniktala area of North Kolkata.
In her complaint lodged with the police on March 9, 2024, the woman said she received an automated call where a person informed her that the parcel she had ordered had been cancelled. The elderly woman thought that she buys so many things from various shopping websites and apps that some orders get cancelled. He called the customer service number given to him on an automated phone call.
According to the police, the fraudsters told them that 200 grams of banned drugs were found in the goods they had ordered. This goods was to be sent to a person named Zhang in Mumbai. He told that he has not sent any such parcel to anyone.
After this the fraudsters claimed that the parcel had been sent using the Aadhar card of the elderly woman. Therefore, the security money should be deposited with the Reserve Bank.
According to the police, the fraudsters also forbade the victim from telling anyone about the case. After this, with the help of her driver, the old woman transferred Rs 78 lakh 30 thousand to the account of the accused between 12 and 13 March 2024. It is learned that he also withdrew money from his fixed deposit.
In the complaint, she said that the accused, posing as a Mumbai Police officer, pressured her to pay money. He also sent fake letters in the name of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Based on that complaint, Kolkata Police recently arrested three people – Baru Ravikant Gokal Bhai, Sondarbha Jilesh Narendrabhai and Chandera Vipul Kumar Kanabhai – after a thorough investigation. All of them are residents of Gujarat.
Police said mobile phones and bank passbooks were also seized from the arrested people.
