Guwahati, Nov 20 (IANS) The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) celebrated the birth anniversary of renowned singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg at its headquarters in Maligaon.

NFR Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Kapinjal Kishore Sharma on Wednesday said Tuesday evening’s event witnessed the dignified presence of special guests Diganta Sarma, Biman Barua, Babita Sarma and Manas Hazarika, all of whom shared a close bond with the renowned maestro. Later he was honored by NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Srivastava.

During the programme, the guests remembered the legend, highlighted the old memories and reflected on his invaluable contribution to the people of Assam and the nation.

The CPRO said the celebrations began with the formal inauguration by the General Manager of NFR, followed by lighting of the lamp and laying of floral tributes on the portrait of the beloved artist.

Senior officials, staff members and union representatives of NFR were also present.

In his address, the General Manager warmly recalled the unique contribution of late Zubeen Garg to Indian music and performing arts, and emphasized how the maestro brought the cultural essence of Assam to the national and international platforms.

He further announced that the cultural grounds of NFR at Maligaon will be renamed as ‘Zubin Garg Bihu Toli’ in honor of the great artist, which will be a lasting tribute to his legacy. He said the occasion is a heartfelt tribute to a cultural icon whose legacy continues to inspire and uplift generations.

Tuesday evening proceeded with a vibrant and colorful cultural program with the energetic participation of talented artistes from the NFR family.

A special video compilation showcased memorable moments from the life journey of late Zubeen Garg, while melodious solo and group performances by members of NFRCA and NFRWWO enriched the tribute.

A standout moment was the soulful group rendition of “Mayabini Ratir”, which received a hearty applause from the audience and evoked a deep sense of nostalgia.

The program concluded with a vote of thanks on behalf of NFR, expressing gratitude to all those whose collective efforts made this festival a fitting tribute to the late Zubeen Garg.

The event marks a joint tribute to their musical talents and reaffirms NFR’s dedication to honoring the Assamese culture and its glorious symbols.

52-year-old famous Assamese singer and music legend Zubeen Garg, whose soulful voice made him famous across the country, passed away in a tragic accident in Singapore on September 19.

Garg had gone to Singapore to participate in the North East Festival, where he was scheduled to perform on September 19. His sudden demise has come as a shock to the program and the Assamese community around the world.

Known as the cultural icon of Assam, Zubeen Garg was not only a singer but also a composer, music director, actor and film producer.

In a career spanning over three decades, he lent his voice to thousands of songs in Assamese, Hindi, Bengali and many other languages.
