Carl Peters owns cocktail And Karaoke Bar at Alibi Altrincham, Greater ManchesterThe venue operates a one door policy that does not allow single entry after 9 pm, Mr Peters has addressed what he described as a “furore” over the policy,
In a video posted to the bar’s Instagram page earlier this month, he explained the door policy. The video was titled: “Door Policy Drama” and Mr Peters explained that he had recorded it in response to being challenged about the policy by a potential singles customer who believed the rule to be discriminatory.
Mr Peters said there were two main factors behind this rule. He said in the video, “If something happens to that person late at night. busy bar atmosphere It’s an absolute nightmare for us to deal with places where people are drinking.
“What also happens is that sometimes if you let people come in on their own, there’s a reason they’re on their own – that they don’t have anyone to talk to, so they start admiring other groups, because they’re not going to sit there quietly at the bar.”
The video shows a sign on the door of the bar. It says: “No single entry. After 9 pm, Alibi does not allow single entry.
“If you are already inside the venue with guests, please contact them prior to entry. This is for the safety of all guests.”
according to bbcReaction from Instagram users to the rule was mixed. It reports that one commentator said they “always felt safe in Alibi”.
Another said it was “narrow minded”, stating that “he has never bothered anyone” and that if he goes for a drink alone after finishing late at work he is “happy in his own company”.
On Wednesday, Mr Peters posted another reel video on Instagram once again defending the policy.
He said: “Well, it’s certainly been an interesting few days with this whole brouhaha over our door policy. To be honest with you, I just want to draw a line under it.
“I will not apologize for prioritizing people’s welfare, safety. That’s the number one priority for us when they come to Alibi, next to making sure you’re all having an amazing time and playing Britney Spears.”
Mr Peters stressed that people were allowed to visit alone before 9pm. He said the policy is sometimes brought up at the door by potential customers but he believes it is “standard procedure in nightlife”.
He explained: “I understand some people don’t agree with the policy, but in a way I don’t care because it literally comes to the door once or twice a month and it’s usually drunks wandering around at midnight trying to get somewhere and we say ‘Sorry, we don’t let people in on their own.’
“That’s literally the application of it. It doesn’t mean we don’t let people in on their own – obviously we do. It’s just that when the bar is completely full and it’s like a nightclub in there, we don’t do that, because it’s not safe.”
