Kolkata, Nov 19 (IANS) The ongoing tussle between West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose and Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee over allegations that arms and ammunition were distributed from Raj Bhavan to BJP-backed goons took a new turn on Wednesday, with Banerjee filing an FIR against the governor at a Kolkata police station.
The FIR is registered under sections 61 (criminal conspiracy), section 152 (act threatening the sovereignty, unity or integrity of India), section 192 (intentional provocation with intent to cause riot – if riot is committed; if not), section 196 (promoting hatred or enmity between different communities) and section 353 (promoting public mischief) of the Indian Code of Justice, 2023. The FIR was lodged by Kalyan Banerjee at Hare Street police station just a day after the Governor’s office filed a case against the Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member in the Calcutta High Court in this matter.
In the legal suit filed by Bose’s Officer on Special Duty (OSD) on behalf of the Governor’s office, it was argued that Banerjee’s comments not only tarnished the dignity of the Governor’s chair, but also had elements of creating an atmosphere and confusion that would ultimately lead to social anarchy.
The controversy over the matter began on Saturday when Banerjee, while speaking to media persons, alleged that the Raj Bhavan was harboring “criminals” from the BJP.
The Trinamool MP also claimed that the Governor should first stop giving shelter to criminals and distributing arms and ammunition to them to kill Trinamool Congress workers. Kalyan Banerjee had said, “As long as there is an incompetent governor like you, as long as there is a BJP servant governor, you will not see anything good happening in West Bengal.”
Responding to the comments, the Governor on Sunday termed the allegation made by Banerjee as “provocative, explosive and irresponsible” and also warned of strict legal action on her part. He also demanded from Kalyan Banerjee to tender an unconditional apology if his allegations made publicly were false.
On Monday, the Governor also launched a joint search and combing operation within the premises of the Raj Bhavan in central Kolkata to check whether the allegations made by the Trinamool Congress MP were true or not.
After a joint search operation yielded nothing, the Governor threatened to take legal action against Banerjee and finally, a case was filed in the matter in the Calcutta High Court by the Governor’s office on Tuesday.
