Chennai, Nov 19 (IANS) Three trainee doctors of Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital (TKGMCH) lost their lives while two others were seriously injured after their car skidded and crashed on South Beach Road in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.
The deceased were identified as S. of Coimbatore. Saroban (23), P. Rahul Jebastian (23) of Pudukottai, and S. of Trupattur. Mukilan (23).
All three were doing medical training at TKGMCH.
Among the injured was R. of Thoothukudi. Kiruthikkumar (23) and Saran (23) of Tirupattur are undergoing treatment in the hospital.
According to police, the accident occurred around dawn when the group of five traveling in a sedan driven by Saruban were traveling on rain-soaked South Beach Road.
Preliminary investigation shows that the car was traveling at a high speed when it slipped on the slippery surface.
The driver reportedly lost control while taking a turn near a barricade, causing the vehicle to go off the road and hit a tree on the roadside.
Passersby alerted the Thoothukudi South police and fire and rescue service personnel, who reached the spot and started the rescue operation.
The vehicle was severely damaged by the impact of the collision, and officers had to carefully remove the injured from the damaged car.
Due to the severity of their injuries, Satnam and Rahul Sebastian were declared dead on the spot.
Critically injured Mukilan was immediately shifted to TKGMCH along with the two survivors.
However, doctors said he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest within minutes of arrival and could not be saved despite emergency efforts.
Kiruthikkumar and Saran, both of whom sustained multiple injuries, are currently being treated in the intensive care unit.
Hospital sources have described his condition as serious but stable.
Thoothukudi South police have registered the case and started further investigation.
Officials are investigating whether speeding, poor visibility or slippery road conditions following overnight rain caused the accident.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom on the TKGMCH campus, where fellow students and faculty members mourn the sudden death of three promising young doctors whose careers had just begun.
