Kolkata, Nov 19 (IANS) A woman Booth Level Officer (BLO) died allegedly by suicide during a Special Intensive Vetting (SIR) exercise in West Bengal. Police gave this information on Wednesday.
This incident took place in Mal Bazaar area of Jalpaiguri, West Bengal.
The hanging body of the female BLO was recovered from the courtyard of her house on Wednesday morning.
The family alleged that she decided to end her life because she could not bear the pressure of SIR work.
According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Shantimani Ekka. She is a resident of Rangamati Panchayat of Mal Bazaar. He was recently given the responsibility of SIR work.
As a BLO, she used to distribute enumeration forms door-to-door and collect the filled forms.
As soon as the family members found the body, they informed the local police station. The police went and recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem.
As soon as the news was received, Minister of State for Backward Class Welfare and Tribal Development Bulu Chik Badaik went to the house of the deceased BLO. He spoke to the family members of the deceased and assured them of cooperation.
The minister said, “This is an unfortunate incident. There is a lot of work pressure on the BLO. The Election Commission should look into this. We will stand with the family of the BLO.”
Family members of the deceased alleged that the woman was unable to handle the “heavy workload” of the SIR practice. She began suffering from depression, he said.
Earlier this month, a woman BLO died of brain stroke due to alleged work pressure. This incident happened in Memari of East Burdwan district.
The deceased was identified as Namita Hansda.
She was an Anganwadi worker by profession and worked as BLO of booth number 278, Chowk Balrampur, Memari.
The deceased’s husband Madhav Hansda had claimed that he was constantly being pressurized to distribute the census forms.
“She was mentally devastated due to work pressure,” Hansda said.
