Kolkata, Nov 19 (IANS) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is trying to find out if there is any connection between the recent seizure of Rs 5 crore in West Bengal and financial scam cases in the state.
ED officials are also probing the background of two persons arrested by Special Task Force sleuths in connection with the seizure last week.
The central probe agency is focusing on whether the duo had any connection with any person accused in any case of financial irregularities.
Currently, the ED is probing three financial irregularity cases in the state: cash for municipal jobs, illegal sand mining, and human trafficking scam under the guise of bars-cum-restaurants.
Several politically influential people, mainly from the Trinamool Congress, are currently under the scanner of the ED.
On Monday, the STF team of West Bengal Police seized Rs 5 crore in cash from a car near Akanksha Crossing in New Town and arrested two people, including the owner of the vehicle.
The recovery of such a huge amount of money during the car investigation has raised concerns, especially ahead of the state assembly elections next year, as well as during the ongoing Special Intensive Review (SIR) by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in the state.
The ECI had already cautioned various central and state intelligence agencies to be cautious about unauthorized cash transit within the state amid the crucial assembly elections next year.
The Commission had also advised state and central intelligence agencies to work in close coordination to prevent such incidents of illicit cash transit.
Last week, the ED had recovered a huge amount of money from the residence of a businessman in Taratala area during searches related to the Municipal Corporation recruitment scam case.
Earlier this month, ED teams had raided around 10 locations across the city, including Salt Lake and Beliaghata.
ED officials searched the house of a businessman in Taratala area in connection with the Municipal Corporation Recruitment corruption case.
