New Delhi, Nov 17 (IANS) The 67th Executive Committee (EC) meeting of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) on Monday discussed the rejuvenation of Yamuna in Delhi through tapping of untreated sewage from Jahangirpuri drain. An officer gave this information.
The official said experts also considered safe and efficient transportation of treated sewage in the river and educational public outreach to school children.
In a meeting chaired by Director General Rajiv Kumar Mittal, approval was given to transport treated sewage from Coronation Pillar STP to Yamuna, the official said in a statement.
The statement said the proposal aims to ensure safe and efficient transportation of treated sewage from the Coronation Pillar STP to the Yamuna, which will improve the water quality of the river and support the ongoing efforts of the Yamuna Action Plan.
It said the project includes major components such as tapping of untreated sewage from Jahangirpuri drain, construction of new pumping stations, laying of rising mains and RCC channels, construction of truss bridges for drain crossings and transportation infrastructure for treated effluent.
Cleaning the polluted Yamuna is a key election promise of the BJP government in Delhi – an issue that Prime Minister Narendra Modi also highlighted while campaigning for the assembly elections in February.
This river, the lifeline of Delhi, flows for 22 km through the urban areas of Delhi from Wazirabad Barrage to Okhla Barrage. The total length of the river within the National Capital Territory of Delhi is approximately 52 km from its entry at Palla to its exit at Jaitpur.
Last month, Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched 18 projects worth Rs 1,816 crore, including sewage treatment projects to curb pollution.
HM Shah announced that PM Modi has given top priority to cleaning Yamuna and a plan has been prepared to clean Yamuna from Yamunotri to Prayagraj within seven months of BJP coming to power in Delhi.
Criticizing the previous AAP government for not fighting pollution in the river, HM Shah said, “The AAP government in Delhi did nothing to clean the river. Their CM announced that he would clean the river and take a dip in it. He did not keep his promise.”
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta hit out at the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Delhi government for not making the most of the Rs 2,000 crore assistance given by the Center for cleaning the Yamuna.
He criticized the failure of the previous government to utilize the funds introduced by PM Modi and HM Shah for the purpose.
The Election Commission approved the Rs 39.37 lakh ‘Youth for Ganga, Youth for Yamuna’ initiative, which aims to promote awareness and responsibility towards river conservation to over 2.5 lakh youth in at least 200 schools across Delhi-NCR.
The program envisages formation of river youth clubs, encouraging positive behavioral change among youth regarding water use and enhancing Namami Gange outreach.
