Kolkata, Nov 16 (IANS) The Indian Coast Guard on Sunday detained a Bangladeshi trawler carrying 29 fishermen in Kolkata. The officers provided this information.
Later the fishermen were handed over to the police station.
Kolkata Police has arrested the fishermen for entering Indian waters.
According to police sources, the Indian Coast Guard spotted a suspicious trawler while patrolling in the Bay of Bengal.
After this, the Coast Guard reached the trawler and found that it had come from Bangladesh after violating the international waters.
There were 29 fishermen in that trawler, who were soon taken into custody.
After taking the trawler to land, the Indian Coast Guard handed over the Bangladeshi fishermen to Fraserganj Coast Police Station in South 24 Parganas district.
Sunderbans Police District Police officials have started investigating how the fishermen entered Indian waters.
The accused will be produced before the Kakdwip sub-divisional court on Monday where the police will seek their custody for further questioning.
Recently an undertrial Indian fisherman died mysteriously in a Bangladesh jail.
In that situation, security was further strengthened in the coastal areas resulting in the seizure of the Bangladeshi trawler.
Kakdwip Fishermen’s Association Secretary Satinath Patra said, “A Bangladeshi fishing trawler violated Indian waters and entered this country. The matter came to the notice of the Indian Coast Guard. Subsequently, the Coast Guard detained the trawler with 29 fishermen and handed them over to the Fraserganj Coast Police Station. The police are investigating the matter.”
Incidentally, reports of Bangladeshi trawlers entering India by violating international waters are common.
Similarly, Indian trawlers along with fishermen also enter Bangladesh waters in the Bay of Bengal.
Last September, a trawler loaded with 13 Bangladeshi fishermen was detained by the Indian Coast Guard.
Later the police arrested the Bangladeshi fishermen.
Since then, sea patrolling has been increased and surveillance has been increased.
