Chennai, Nov 16 (IANS) The Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) led by actor-politician Vijay will hold protests across Tamil Nadu on Sunday against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list.

The party alleges that the ongoing revision has created widespread confusion among voters and raised concerns about possible exclusion of eligible citizens from the voter list.

TVK district secretaries have already obtained police permission to organize demonstrations in all district headquarters.

Senior TVK leaders said the agitation was announced after the party received several representations from the public regarding the lack of clarity in the SIR processes. He claimed that many voters were unsure about the new verification requirements and feared that their names might disappear from the updated list as a result of errors or delays in the process.

TVK described the exercise as an “opaque and poorly communicated” effort that has caused concern among voters. The main protest in Chennai will start on Shivananda Road. TVK general secretary Anand will lead the rally and a large number of people, including district secretaries, administrators, senior officials and cadres from different parts of the city, are expected to attend.

The party has directed all its officials across Tamil Nadu to actively participate in their respective district-level protests to ensure maximum mobilization.

Along with this, demonstrations are being held by TVK units in many other districts also. These local protests will highlight area-specific grievances associated with SIR, such as difficulty in accessing forms, inconsistent guidance from officials, slow updates to records, and a general lack of awareness among both voters and field staff.

TVK said in a statement that the protests were aimed at protecting the democratic rights of the people of Tamil Nadu. The party accused the authorities of imposing “special and sweeping amendments” without conducting adequate public awareness programmes.

It said many citizens still did not fully understand whether their names would be included in the revised voter list, leading to widespread uncertainty.

TVK also criticized what it called poor communication by officials regarding verification steps and deadlines. The party says such omissions undermine voter confidence and risk disenfranchising genuine voters.

Emphasizing that the right to vote is central to democracy, the party said it is important to challenge any process that may inadvertently exclude eligible citizens.

TVK warned that if the authorities fail to address the concerns raised during the protests, the party will intensify its agitation. It has called for greater transparency, clear communication and a more streamlined vetting mechanism to ensure that no eligible voter is left out of the electoral rolls.
