Tripura government committed to the socio-economic upliftment of the tribal community: CM Saha

Agartala, Nov 15 (IANS) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Saturday said the state government is strongly committed to ensuring socio-economic development of the ‘Janjati’ (tribal) community, and stressed that inclusive progress remains a key priority.

Addressing a function organized on the occasion of Tribal Pride Day at Khumpui Academy, the headquarters of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) in Khumulwang, the Chief Minister said that the progress of the state is not possible without the development of the tribal community.

Chief Minister Saha said that the BJP government is working for their welfare by following the path shown by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He said, “It is because of Prime Minister Modi that we are getting to know about tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda.” He said that PM Modi announced to celebrate Tribal Pride Day on November 15 every year to honor the role of the tribal community in India’s freedom struggle.

The Chief Minister said that Birsa Munda is called a great tribal leader and the Prime Minister has felt the need to highlight his bravery and valor.

He said that like last year, this year also Tribal Pride Day is being celebrated through various programmes.

CM Saha said, “This program is being celebrated at the national level in Narmada district of Gujarat. The Prime Minister will address the program there. The main event in Tripura has been organized at Khumpui Academy in Khumulwang. Apart from this, arrangements have been made to celebrate this day through various programs across the state. The state government is especially committed to the socio-economic development of the tribal community. Due to this sustained effort, Tripura has recently won three national awards.

The Chief Minister also said in the program that the state government has taken many decisions.

He said that at present 34,000 students are being given hostel scholarship in the state.

“In the current financial year, 2,700 more seats will be added in various student hostels.”

He said the hostel scholarship rate will be increased from the existing Rs 80 to Rs 100 per student per day from December 1, 2025.

CM Saha said that for this, an additional amount of Rs 8.81 crore will be spent in the financial year 2025-26 and Rs 23.35 crore will be spent in the next financial year 2026-27.

He also announced that a 100-bed boys’ hostel for college students would be built at Abhaynagar in Agartala at a cost of Rs 5.74 crore.

He informed that under the Chief Minister Tribal Development Mission, solar energy based water purification system with composite solar units will be installed in 50 tribal government hostels with financial assistance of Rs 19 crore.

Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma, Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma, Forest Minister Animesh Debirma, Rajya Sabha member Rajib Bhatterjee, Lok Sabha member Kriti Devi Devi Devi, Chief Secretary JK Sinha, Director General of Police, other public representatives and senior officials were present in this program.
