Bhopal, Nov 15 (IANS) Over 200 people from the Kshatriya community under the banner of Karni Sena protested on Saturday, alleging that the Madhya Pradesh government led by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav failed to fulfill several key promises made by them and there was police excesses against them in Harda.
According to official information, hundreds of Karni Sena members gathered in Bhopal to protest against the state government.
However, they later marched towards the Chief Minister’s residence.
Anticipating the gathering of Karna Sena members, police deployed heavy security and stopped the procession midway.
Chief Minister Yadav on Saturday participated in the Pride Tribe Day in Alirajpur and Jabalpur on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of tribal icon Birsa Munda.
Madhya Pradesh Karni Sena president Indal Singh Rana, speaking to the media later, said Saturday’s protest was the beginning of a larger movement, warning that any delay in meeting their demands would escalate tensions.
During the protest, Karni Sena demanded a high-level inquiry into the Harda incident, strict action against the police officers involved, increasing the reservation for economically weaker sections from 10 per cent to 20 per cent with simplified certification processes.
On July 13, police reportedly lathicharged during a protest by Karni Sena members demanding the custody of a man accused of fraud in a diamond-related case in Harda.
Chief Minister Yadav, who was on a week-long foreign tour to seek investment in the state, had expressed disappointment and ordered a high-level inquiry into the matter.
A video showing ‘lathi charge’ by police at a girls hostel, some houses and other places in Harda had created a political controversy.
Senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister Digvijay Singh, who hails from the Kshatriya community, had visited Harda and addressed a press conference.
