Jabalpur, Nov 15 (IANS) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Saturday handed over a check of Rs 1 crore to Kranti Gaur, who was part of the Indian women’s cricket team that won the country’s maiden World Cup in Mumbai earlier this month.
The Chief Minister had announced to provide financial assistance to Kranti Gaur during a meeting in his office in Bhopal last week. It was decided that he would be given a check of Rs 1 crore on the occasion of Tribal Pride Day programme.
Chief Minister Yadav had then also announced the construction of a cricket stadium in Chhatarpur and assured to resolve his father’s suspension from Madhya Pradesh Police.
Kranti’s father, Munna Singh Gaur, a police constable, is under suspension since 2011-12 for alleged negligence during election duty.
Gaur, a woman cricketer from the tribal community of Chhatarpur district of Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh, received the award on Saturday on the 150th birth anniversary of great freedom fighter and tribal icon Birsa Munda, which is being celebrated across the country.
Notably, on 2 November at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, Kranti Goud helped India defend 299 runs and beat South Africa by 52 runs and win the first ICC Women’s ODI World Cup.
Kranti’s tournament achievements – nine wickets at an average of 40.11 in eight matches, including three wickets for player-of-the-match against Pakistan – had already etched his name in history. But this was not just a pat on the back.
Before inaugurating the state-level Tribal Pride Day program in Jabalpur, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav addressed a similar program in Alirajpur, one of the tribal dominated districts of Madhya Pradesh, and remembered the great Birsa Munda and other tribal heroes.
Addressing the program in Alirajpur, the Chief Minister also remembered revolutionary freedom fighter Chandra Shekhar Azad, who was born in Alirajpur in 1906.
