Ranchi, Nov 15 (IANS) Chief Justice of India-designate Justice Surya Kant on Saturday stressed that the purpose of the judiciary goes beyond resolving disputes, and it must also protect the underprivileged and the weak.

Participating as the chief guest at the silver jubilee celebrations of the Jharkhand High Court here, Justice Surya Kant said, “Justice is for all – this is the basic message of the Constitution. Equality and transparency are essential conditions of the judicial system, and justice should be accessible to all.”

At the beginning of the programme, he paid tribute to tribal icon and freedom fighter Lord Birsa Munda on his 150th birth anniversary and said that “Lord Birsa belongs to all of us and will always remain so.”

Highlighting the important role of the High Court, Justice Surya Kant said that it acts as a bridge between the Supreme Court and the district courts and plays an important role in protecting the rights of the citizens of Jharkhand.

He congratulated the Jharkhand High Court on completing 25 years and expressed confidence that it will continue to uphold the high judicial traditions.

Special guest, Union Minister of State for Law and Justice (Independent Charge) Arjun Ram Meghwal appreciated the work of the High Court in providing quick and easy justice.

He said the judiciary should embrace technological advancements in the era of AI and IT and suggested that the High Court prepare a roadmap for its golden jubilee.

He also assured the advocates that the Center will consider the demand of the Central Administrative Tribunal bench in Ranchi.

During the programme, Justice Surya Kant launched the District Judiciary Mobile App of Jharkhand and released the souvenir “Pragati” of the High Court.

Earlier, the dignitaries offered floral tributes to the portrait of Lord Birsa Munda.

Supreme Court Justices Dipankar Dutta, Prashant Kumar Mishra, Sandeep Mehta, Vijay Bishnoi, Chief Justices of Mumbai and Telangana High Courts and several former judges, lawyers and judicial officers attended the ceremony.
