Kolkata, November 15 (IANS) A massive fire broke out on Ezra Street near Lalbazar in Kolkata on Saturday and is still raging.
At least 20 fire engines have been pressed into service to extinguish the flames.
Efforts are being made to control the fire.
Since this area is crowded, the amount of damage is likely to be high.
Considering the situation, the number of fire tenders may increase further.
Fire officials are working on a war footing to bring the situation under control. So far they have not been able to find the source of the fire.
According to local sources, the fire broke out in the warehouse at around five in the morning.
Electrical equipment, a lot of electrical wires and flammable materials were kept in the warehouse.
Before anyone could understand anything, black clouds of smoke covered the entire sky. It is not yet clear how the fire started.
However, initially it is suspected that the fire may have originated from some electrical equipment.
Fire department sources said that short circuit could be the cause of the fire. However, the exact cause of the fire is not yet known.
Local people allege that there were not adequate arrangements to extinguish the fire in the warehouse.
Seeing smoke coming out of the warehouse, local people informed the police and fire department about the incident. Being a densely populated area, the situation went out of control.
The fire has spread from the warehouse to nearby houses as well.
It is being told that the fire has spread to many houses. It is not yet clear whether anyone is trapped inside or not.
Sources said that no one has been injured or died so far.
A section of the local people expressed anger against the fire department alleging that they arrived late despite being informed immediately after the fire broke out.
Locals claimed that as firefighters arrived “late”, the fire spread to other houses.
