Ahmedabad, Nov 15 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in Gujarat on Saturday to review one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure ventures – the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR).
At around 10 am, the Prime Minister is scheduled to inspect the under-construction Bullet Train Station in Surat, a major node on the 508-km long route that is set to usher India into the era of high-speed rail travel.
Stretching across Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, the corridor will link major urban centers including Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Bilimora, Vapi, Boisar, Virar, Thane, and Mumbai.
Of the total length, 352 km lies in Gujarat and the Union Territory, while 156 km falls in Maharashtra.
Engineered to meet global standards, about 85 per cent of the corridor – approximately 465 km – is being built on elevated bridges to ensure safety, efficiency and minimal land disruption.
Project authorities have reported substantial progress, with 326 km of bridges already completed and 17 out of 25 river bridges ready.
Once operational, the Bullet Train will reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad by approximately two hours, dramatically changing the dynamics of trade, tourism and regional connectivity.
Officials said the project will serve as an economic catalyst, leading to investment and development across the region.
The Surat-Bilimora section, which stretches for about 47 km, is the most advanced in terms of preparation, with civil structures and track-bed laying work completely completed.
Surat station has been designed to reflect the city’s prestigious diamond industry, combining modern aesthetics with practical, passenger-friendly infrastructure.
It will have amenities like spacious lounges, restrooms and retail units and seamless integration with Surat Metro, city bus services and Indian Railways.
With a mix of expansion, modernization and multimodal integration, Surat’s railway infrastructure has rapidly become one of the most modern and strategically important transit hubs in Western India.
The city is undergoing major upgrades through the redevelopment of Surat Railway Station under the Railway Station Redevelopment Programme, which includes improved passenger amenities, concourse-based circulation and better connectivity.
