New Delhi, Nov 14 (IANS) The results of the Assembly by-elections held on November 11 showed a mixed mandate, with both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning two seats each out of eight. Regional parties also maintained their dominance by maintaining influence in their respective strongholds.
Congress registered two important victories in Rajasthan and Telangana.
On Rajasthan’s Anta seat, Pramod Jain Bhaya secured 69,571 votes and defeated BJP’s Morpal Suman by 15,612 votes.
In Jubilee Hills of Telangana, Congress snatched the seat from Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). Congress candidate V. Naveen Yadav defeated BRS’s Maganti Sunita by 24,729 votes – the highest winning margin in the history of the constituency.
Meanwhile, BJP claimed two major victories in Jammu and Kashmir and Odisha.
In Jammu and Kashmir’s Nagrota, BJP candidate Devyani Rana won a landslide victory by a margin of 24,647 votes.
In Nuapada, Odisha, BJP’s Jai Dholakia defeated Congress candidate Ghasi Ram Majhi by a huge margin of 83,748 votes, while Biju Janata Dal came third.
Regional parties demonstrated strongly in many states.
In Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) emerged victorious, with Agha Syed Muntazir Mehdi defeating his nearest National Conference rival Agha Syed Mahmood Al-Mosawi by 4,478 votes. BJP’s Agha Syed Mohsin Mosvi finished sixth with only 2,619 votes.
In Mizoram, the Mizo National Front (MNF) retained its hold on the Dampa seat, where Dr R. Lalthangliyana won by a slim margin of 562 votes.
The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab successfully defended the Tarn Taran assembly seat. Here, AAP candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu retained the Tarn Taran assembly seat, defeating his nearest rival Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)’s Sukhwinder Kaur, who was leading in the initial round of counting, by over 12,000 votes.
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) won a landslide victory in Ghatshila, Jharkhand. Somesh Chandra Soren, son of former chief minister Champai Soren, defeated BJP’s Babulal Soren by a margin of 38,524 votes, getting 1,04,794 votes as against the BJP candidate’s 66,270 votes. The deposits of all the other 11 candidates were forfeited.
