Mangaluru, Nov 13 (IANS) Union New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi said India’s maritime sector is growing rapidly and the country will become one of the top 10 shipbuilding countries in the world by 2030.
Speaking at the golden jubilee celebrations of the New Mangalore Port Authority on Thursday, Joshi expressed confidence that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, India will rank among the top five global economies by 2047.
“With the leadership and support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s shipbuilding capacity has improved significantly. Along with service activities, our production capabilities have also increased significantly,” Joshi said.
He emphasized that the port sector plays an important role in promoting India’s exports. He said that to strengthen export activities and increase trade efficiency, the Central Government is giving priority to reduction in logistics costs.
New Mangalore Port on the west coast of India is one of the most important ports of Karnataka and the seventh largest port in the country. Joshi said, “It has made a unique contribution to India’s economic development, maritime trade and industrial progress of southern India.”
India has achieved unprecedented progress in maritime trade through port modernisation, better coastal connectivity and attraction of global investments.
“These efforts have transformed India into a powerhouse in the global maritime economy,” he said.
Joshi said, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, India has emerged as the world’s fourth largest economy and is soon poised to become the third largest economy. Competing with major global powers like the United States and China, India is making significant progress in promoting manufacturing and exports.”
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, who presided over the event, said the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) is expected to handle 100 million tonnes of cargo within the next 22 years.
Sonowal said, “It is the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that by 2047, Indian ports should handle 10,000 million metric tonnes of cargo. We are confident of achieving this target under his leadership.”
He said that NMPA has achieved the status of being 100 per cent solar powered and green port.
“Several advanced technological initiatives have been implemented, including robotic fire fighting systems and drone surveillance of the port,” he said.
