Punjab: ISI-backed grenade attack module busted, 10 arrested

Chandigarh, Nov 13 (IANS) Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Thursday said that in a major breakthrough, the Ludhiana Commissionerate Police has busted a Pakistan-based ISI-backed grenade attack module with the arrest of 10 key operatives of a foreign-based handler.

The arrested people have been identified as Kuldeep Singh, Shekhar Singh and Ajay Singh, residents of Muktsar Sahib. While Amrik Singh, Parminder, Vijay, Sukhjeet Singh, Sukhwinder Singh, Karanveer Singh and Sajan Kumar have been brought on production warrants from different jails for the role of couriers and facilitators.

Police also recovered one 86P Chinese hand grenade, a black kit and a set of gloves from the accused.

DGP Yadav said preliminary investigation revealed that the accused were in touch with Pakistan-based handlers through three Malaysia-based operatives to coordinate the pickup and delivery of hand grenades.

The DGP said that the task of carrying out the grenade attack in a populated area was assigned by the handlers to create unrest in the state.

Acting on intelligence, a first information report (FIR) was registered against suspects Kuldeep Singh, Shekhar Singh and Ajay Singh, Police Commissioner (Ludhiana) Swapan Sharma said.

Considering the sensitivity of the case, special teams were formed to ensure prompt and effective action, he said, adding that further investigation has identified the foreign-based masterminds, Malaysia-based Ajay Malaysia, Jas Behbal and Pawandeep.

The men are known to be living together abroad and were in touch with local facilitators Amrik Singh and Parminder, both of whom were previously involved in running drug smuggling operations for them.

The police commissioner said that during the investigation, Ajay Malaysia’s brother Vijay, who was lodged in Rajasthan’s Ganganagar jail in a commercial quantity NDPS Act case, was also arrested on a production warrant for his role as a facilitator in the case.

He said that the investigation also revealed a local network involving accused Sukhjit Singh, Sukhwinder Singh, Karanveer Singh and Sajan in facilitating the delivery of hand grenades in Punjab.
