New Delhi, Nov 13 (IANS) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a junior engineer of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Najafgarh zone, while accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from a complainant. The agency gave this information on Thursday.
According to the CBI, on November 11, three MCD officials – RC Sharma, executive engineer; Naveen Kaul, Assistant Engineer; and Ajay Babbarwal, Junior Engineer – all posted in Najafgarh zone.
The trio had allegedly demanded undue favors of Rs 25.42 lakh from a contractor to pay pending bills of around Rs three crore.
Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and caught junior engineer Ajay Babbarwal red-handed while accepting Rs 10 lakh as part of the bribe demanded.
The agency then conducted searches at several premises linked to the accused officials, leading to the recovery of a large amount of cash, jewelery and documents related to the property.
“The CBI conducted searches at the premises of the accused persons which led to the recovery of a huge amount of cash, jewelery and documents relating to the property,” the CBI said in its press note.
The CBI further said that investigation is ongoing to unearth the entire network of corruption.
Reiterating its commitment to fight corruption, the agency urged citizens to report any cases of bribery or demand of illegal gratification by public servants.
“Citizens who encounter cases of corruption or demands for bribes by public officials are encouraged to report such cases,” it added.
Similarly, the agency on Wednesday said it has arrested a bank manager of a private bank in Mumbai for his active role in facilitating opening of mule accounts.
The name of the accused arrested on November 11 is Nitesh Rai, Bank Manager, Axis Bank.
According to the investigation, it was revealed that the arrested bank official, in connivance with cyber criminals, accepted illegal bribes and “abused his official position to process account opening forms and thereby created channels for circulation and stratification of cyber crime proceeds”.
