Chennai, Nov 12 (IANS) The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC), Chennai, issued a weather warning on Wednesday, predicting widespread rainfall over many parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal in the next few days due to the low pressure area developed over the Bay of Bengal.
According to the latest bulletin of RMC, a low pressure system is currently lying over the south-western Bay of Bengal and adjoining south-eastern Bay, which is affecting the weather conditions over the southern peninsula.
This atmospheric disturbance is expected to cause moderate to heavy rain with thunder and lightning over isolated places in Tamil Nadu, especially in the southern and delta regions.
The Meteorological Department has predicted that between November 13 and 17, there may be intermittent light to moderate rain in many districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The delta belt, which includes Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai as well as Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpattu and Kallakurichi, may receive heavy rainfall at isolated places during this period.
Rain activity is expected to intensify slightly on November 18, with light to moderate rain likely over many areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
The RMC bulletin also warned that heavy rainfall may occur at one or two places in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai and Ramanathapuram districts as well as Karaikal.
The weather department has urged fishermen to remain alert and avoid venturing into the sea in the coming days, as the developing system may cause rough sea conditions and strong winds along coastal areas.
Officials have been instructed to remain alert, especially in the southern coastal districts, where heavy rainfall at isolated places may cause waterlogging, flooding in low-lying areas and disruption of road traffic.
Meteorologists said further updates will depend on the development of the low pressure system, which may strengthen as it moves westward over the Bay of Bengal.
