At least 37 people were killed and 13 others injured when a passenger bus fell into a deep gorge in southern peru After colliding with another vehicle early Wednesday morning.
Arequipa region health manager Walther Oporto told local radio RPP that the bus collided with a pickup truck before going off a winding road.
It then dropped more than 200 meters (650 ft) to the banks of the Ocona River.
The vehicle was headed from Chala, a mining town in southern Peru, to Arequipa.
Fatal bus accidents are not uncommon in Peru.
The cause of Wednesday’s crash is unclear, but officials have previously said that reckless driving and excessive speed are behind many of these incidents.
In August, a bus overturned on the highway and 10 people died.
In July, another bus heading from Lima to Peru’s Amazon region also overturned, killing at least 18 and injuring 48.
In January, at least six people were killed and 32 injured when a bus fell into a river.
According to official data from the Death Information System, there were approximately 3,173 deaths as a result of traffic accidents in the South American country in 2024.
