Chandigarh, Nov 11 (IANS) The Amritsar-based Special Operations Cell of Punjab Police has arrested two more people linked to the gangster-terrorist module operating in multiple districts in a joint operation with the Counter Intelligence (CI) of Pathankot, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said here on Tuesday.
Police recovered a sophisticated 9mm Glock pistol, three magazines and five cartridges from their possession.
The arrested people have been identified as Harpreet Singh, resident of Baupur Afghana, Gurdaspur and Navpreet Singh, resident of Machiwal village, Amritsar.
DGP Yadav said preliminary investigation revealed that the accused were acting at the behest of their UK-based handler, who had arranged the weapons and assigned them the task of conducting recce of specific targets in Gurdaspur, Batala and Amritsar areas.
He said, the arrested accused were planning targeted killings to create panic and communal unrest in the state.
The DGP said that earlier two members of the same module were arrested and a hand grenade and a pistol were recovered from them. He said that the latest arrests were made during the investigation of the same case.
Sharing operational details, Assistant Inspector General Sukhminder Singh Mann said that based on clues received from the previous operation, the Special Operations Cell of Amritsar and CI of Pathankot conducted a meticulous investigation to uncover the extent of activities of the network, which led to the identification and arrest of two more persons linked to the same module.
The Assistant Inspector General said further investigation is underway to uncover and dismantle the entire network including its backward and forward linkages.
More arrests and seizures are likely to take place in the coming days. A case in this regard was registered in Amritsar under Section 25 of the Arms Act, Section 61 (2) of the Indian Judicial Code (BNS) and Sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosives Act.
