Bihar elections: 60.40 percent voting till 3 pm in the second phase

Patna, Nov 11 (IANS) Amid signs of a possible bumper turnout, 60.40 per cent voting was recorded till 3 pm in the second and final phase of Bihar assembly elections on Tuesday, ECI data said. Till 3 pm, the highest turnout of 66.10 percent was recorded in Kishanganj district. In Kishanganj district, Kishanganj seat (AC-54) led with 68.13 per cent voting till 3 pm. 66.57 percent was recorded in Thakurganj (AC-53), 66.53 percent in Kochadhaman (AC-55) and 63.27 percent in Bahadurganj (AC-52). The ECI bulletin said that till 3 pm, Purnia district recorded the second highest voter turnout of 64.22 percent. Till 3 pm, Kasba constituency (AC-58) of the district recorded the highest voting percentage of 66.98 percent, followed by 65.74 percent voting in Purnia seat (AC-62) and 65.08 percent voting in Baisi (AC-Baisi). Till 3 pm on Tuesday, the slowest voting was recorded in Nawada district at 53.17 percent. Nawada constituency (AC-237) recorded the slowest voting rate at 49.04 per cent till 3 pm. By 1 pm, more than 47 percent voters in Bihar had cast their votes, which was about 5 percent more than in the first phase of the same period, raising hopes of record turnout in the second phase as well. In the second phase of elections in Bihar, voting is taking place in 122 constituencies of 20 districts. Earlier, the first phase of Bihar elections on November 6 had recorded 64.66 per cent voting, breaking all previous records as the state had never seen more than 63 per cent voting since independence. The final phase of voting on Tuesday will play a decisive role in shaping the composition of the next state government. A total of 1,302 candidates, including 136 women and one candidate of a third gender, are in the fray in the second phase, which covers parts of central, western and north Bihar. Nearly 3.7 crore voters, including 1.95 crore men and 1.74 crore women, are eligible to cast their votes across 45,399 polling stations, the largest ever for any election phase in the state. Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Vinod Singh Gunjiyal said the first phase of Bihar Assembly elections was held peacefully on November 6, with a record 64.66 per cent voter turnout, the highest in the electoral history of the state. In the first phase, polling was held in a total of 121 assembly constituencies across 18 districts with 3,75,13,302 voters, including 1,98,35,325 male, 1,76,77,219 female and 758 third gender voters. The results of all 243 assembly constituencies will be declared on November 14. –IANS rc/dan
