New Delhi, Nov 11 (IANS) Preliminary investigation has revealed that the driver of the Hyundai i20 involved in the blast near Delhi’s Red Fort metro station was Dr Mohammad Omar, a resident of Koil village in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, sources said. CCTV footage of the area confirmed that Umar was driving the car. The blast occurred on Monday evening when a Haryana-registered car, a Hyundai i20, parked near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort metro station exploded, killing at least eight people and injuring dozens. High alert has been issued in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Mumbai and security has been increased in crowded public places and around religious places. The incident also came just hours after police busted a terror module linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind terror organizations in Faridabad and seized 2,900 kg of explosives and huge cache of arms and ammunition. According to sources, after the terrorist module was exposed in Faridabad, Umar became nervous due to the fear of being caught and hence he decided to run away. Sources said that agencies are suspecting that either Omar deliberately caused the blast or the blast may have occurred suddenly near the metro station. The investigating agencies are now trying to find out why Umar had come to the Red Fort area. Meanwhile, the police have arrested his two brothers and mother for questioning, while his father is reportedly mentally challenged. Umar did MBBS from the prestigious Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar. He secured a seat in the prestigious medical college on the basis of merit. Neighbors said that although he was a hard-working and studious child, Omar had a deep, fundamental Islamist influence since childhood. Another doctor arrested in the terror-busting operation is Dr Muzammil, a resident of Koil village in Pulwama. Even after the arrest of Adil and Muzammil, Dr Mohammad Omar was absconding. It is believed that Umar was completely terrified by the arrest of his associates and out of panic he carried out the Red Fort blast. Meanwhile, as part of stringent security measures, Delhi Police has closed Gate No. 1 and 4 of the Red Fort metro station for public movement due to the ongoing security operations in the area. Delhi Police continues to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the blast, and insist that all possible angles are being investigated. –IANS SD/Red
