South Korean ousted president yoon suk yeol But the opponent is accused of flying a drone north korea In an attempt to deliberately incite tension and justify his plan to declare martial law.

Mr. Yoon and two of his defense aides were indicted by prosecutors on Monday on charges of providing a benefit to the enemy and abuse of power over the alleged drone flight operations.

He said the former Conservative leader increased tensions with the neighboring country and undermined national security through this fabricated operation.

Mr Yun became the first outgoing president of his country to be arrested after he briefly imposed martial law last year and was charged with rebellion, plunging the country into political turmoil.

Mr Yoon, 64, was arrested in January and taken to the corruption investigation office for questioning.

He was also impeached by the National Assembly and suspended from office, a decision later upheld by the Constitutional Court.

Rebellion is one of the rare crimes for which South Korean presidents do not have immunity. This crime carries severe penalties which may include life imprisonment and even death penalty.

Special prosecutor Cho Eun Suk’s team said Mr Yoon directed the drone flights to create a pretext for declaring martial law on December 3, 2024.

He alleged that he was assisted in this plan by then-Defense Minister Kim Yong-Hyun and military counter-intelligence commander Yeo In-Hyung.

A memo found on Mr Yeo’s phone described planning between three officers before imposing martial law.

The memorandum stated, “We must destabilize or occupy it”, “The enemy must act first”, “The enemy is in a very defensive position”, which suggested that the three leaders were working to create a military standoff. korea herald Informed.

Mr. Yeo, a close aide of Mr. Yoon, also listed what he described as drone targets to which the rival nation “will definitely react,” such as its capital Pyongyang, the leader’s residence. Kim Jong Un Jong Unand two nuclear facilities.

Prosecutors alleged that because the drones crashed during the operation and classified operational data was exposed, the mission compromised the country’s defense interests.

Tension between the two Koreas increased after Pyongyang’s accusation in October 2024 soul Drones are being flown over the capital to drop propaganda leaflets.

Mr Yun’s defense minister initially issued a vague denial but South Korea’s military later began saying they could not confirm whether Pyongyang’s claim was true. Any public confirmation of South Korean reconnaissance activities inside North Korea is highly unusual.
