Chandigarh, Nov 10 (IANS) Punjab Police’s State Special Operation Cell (SSOC), Amritsar, in a major operation based on intelligence, has prevented potential targeted killings in the state with the arrest of four members of a gangster module and recovered two sophisticated weapons from their possession, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said here on Monday.
Those arrested have been identified as Jagpreet Singh alias Jagga, Mohammad Singh, Lavish Nahar and Amarbir Singh.
The recovered weapons included one 9mm Glock pistol, one magazine and five cartridges and one .30 bore Star Mark pistol, one magazine and three cartridges.
DGP Yadav said preliminary investigation revealed that the arrested accused were in close contact with a wanted Portugal-based gangster and were working under his direction.
He said that the foreign-based handler had arranged for the delivery of the weapons recovered in this case.
“Investigation has also revealed that the accused had conducted recce of specific targets in Batala and Amritsar area and the recovered sophisticated weapons were meant to target those targets,” the DGP said, adding that important leads regarding the gang’s activities were being investigated.
Sharing the operational details, Assistant Inspector General Sukhminder Singh Mann said that based on specific inputs the module was busted, following which Amritsar police teams arrested the accused from Amritsar.
He said the investigation also revealed that the arrested people had delivered weapons and money on several occasions at the behest of their foreign-based handlers.
He said further investigation is underway to ascertain all backward and forward linkages. In this regard, a case FIR number 66 dated November 9 has been registered in Amritsar Police Station State Special Operation Cell under Section 25 of the Arms Act and Section 61 (2) of the Indian Justice Code (BNS).
