Moradabad, Nov 10 (IANS) As the Uttar Pradesh government announced that singing ‘Vande Mataram’ will be made mandatory in all schools and educational institutions across the state, Samajwadi Party leader ST Hasan on Monday asked why it was being linked to patriotism.
Speaking to IANS, former MP Hasan said, “Muslims have been opposing ‘Vande Mataram’ for the last 150 years. The reason is that it contains ideas that go against Islam. We cannot worship anyone other than Allah. The land is worshiped in ‘Vande Mataram’. If we worship anyone other than Allah, it means adding someone else to the divinity of Allah, which is strictly prohibited in our Holy Quran.”
“God has created human beings and to help them He has created air, sky and sea. So we cannot worship them. If there is worship of land in Vande Mataram, it becomes our compulsion not to say it. But if it is not so, we can recite it a thousand times. No Muslim has ever protested ‘Jana Gana Mana’. Why is ‘Vande Mataram’ being associated with patriotism? Muslims can sacrifice everything for their country; we Can even give up one’s life for this. But this is it.” It is not mandatory to say ‘Vande Mataram’.
Addressing the ‘Ekta Yatra’ and ‘Vande Mataram’ singing program in Gorakhpur, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said, “There should be a feeling of respect for the national song ‘Vande Mataram’. We will make its singing mandatory in every school and educational institution of Uttar Pradesh so that a feeling of reverence and respect for Mother India and our motherland is created in everyone’s mind.”
The Chief Minister also recalled that ‘Vande Mataram’ was sung in every session of the Congress from 1896 to 1922. However, in 1923, when Mohammed Ali Jauhar became Congress President, he walked out as soon as the song started and refused to participate.
“Opposition to ‘Vande Mataram’ became one of the unfortunate reasons for the partition of India,” he claimed.
“If Congress had respected India’s nationalism through ‘Vande Mataram’ and removed Mohammad Ali Johar from the post of party president at that time, perhaps partition would not have happened.”
