New Delhi, Nov 10 (IANS) As Bihar gears up for the second and final phase of assembly elections, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday said the grand alliance will free the state from the “helpless system” that has been prevailing for the last two decades.
Mallikarjun Kharge said on social media, “The grand alliance will liberate Bihar from 20 years of poor system. Now migration will stop, darkness will be removed from the future of the youth. With employment in every household, their future will be bright.”
He further said, “Now we will end injustice, transform Bihar through social justice. Dalits, Mahadalits, tribals, backward, extremely backward, economically weaker sections and minorities will get their rights.”
Highlighting the alliance’s promises, Kharge said, “There will be economic upliftment of women, farmers, youth and every section of the society. The people of Bihar have set out to change the face of the state. We will restore the pride of Bihar. We guarantee, we will make it happen.”
Meanwhile, campaigning for the final phase of Bihar Assembly elections to be held on Tuesday (November 11) ended on Sunday evening.
In this phase, voting will be held in a total of 122 constituencies in 20 districts. In the first phase, voting was held on 121 seats in 18 districts. This time, 1,302 candidates are in the fray, including 136 women – about 10 per cent of the total. Voting will take place across 45,399 polling stations, with 3.70 crore voters – including 1.95 crore men and 1.74 crore women.
In the 2020 assembly elections, BJP won 42 of these 122 seats, followed by RJD 33, JD(U) 20, Congress 11 and Left parties five. In the 2015 election, when JD(U) and RJD were allies, the BJP’s seats dropped to 36, while the JD(U)-RJD-Congress alliance captured 80 of these seats.
The constituencies where voting is to be held in this phase are spread across the central, western and northern regions of Bihar. The BJP traditionally dominates Tirhut, Saran and North Mithilanchal, which includes districts like East Champaran, West Champaran, Sheohar, Sitamarhi and Saran.
JDU retains its influence in Bhagalpur, while the Grand Alliance has a strong base in the Magadh region including Gaya, Aurangabad, Nawada, Jehanabad and Arwal. However, Congress is dependent on its allies for influence in these areas.
