Murder accused injured in police encounter in Ballia, UP

New Delhi, Nov 10 (IANS) A murder accused was injured in a police encounter during a late night checking operation near Ghoghachatti-Badagaon Road under Maniyar police station area in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh.

According to police officials, when the police tried to stop him, the accused opened fire on the police team, following which the police had to retaliate. A bullet hit the accused’s leg, injuring him.

The incident occurred late on Sunday night when a police team was conducting a routine investigation in the area. Seeing a motorcycle coming at high speed, the police signaled the rider to stop. However, instead of complying, the motorcyclist tried to flee, leading to a brief chase. As the police surrounded him, he allegedly opened fire on the officers. In self-defence, the police team retaliated, injuring the suspect.

On enquiry, the injured person identified himself as Abhinandan alias Abhidendra Rajbharki, a resident of the same area. During interrogation, he confessed to killing a youth with an ax in Mahalipur village of Maniyar police station area a few days ago.

Police recovered a pistol, one live cartridge and an empty cartridge from his possession.

Police confirmed that the injured accused was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment and further legal action is being taken.

Giving information to the media, Additional Superintendent of Police (Ballia) Kripa Shankar said, “Yesterday, an incident took place under Maniyar police station in Ballia district, in which Chandan Rajbharki was brutally murdered. A case of murder has been registered in this regard and investigation is being done. Today the police received information that the main suspect was running away on a motorcycle. When the police surrounded him and challenged him, he started firing. During the firing, he was shot in the leg.”

He said, “His name is Abhidendran Rajbharki, who is the prime suspect in the murder case. When he was searched, a pistol, one live bullet and one empty cartridge were recovered. He has been sent to the hospital, and necessary legal procedures are being done. Police forces are deployed at the spot.”

The police are continuing their investigation in the case and are confirming possible links of the accused with other criminal activities.
