Agartala, Nov 9 (IANS) All senior BJP leaders held an important meeting here on Sunday in the presence of Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and discussed various organizational matters and upcoming party programmes.
State BJP president and Rajya Sabha member Rajib Bhattacharjee said in a post on his
Sunday’s meeting was held in the backdrop of two consecutive closed-door meetings of the Chief Minister with Tipra Motha Party (TMP) supremo Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma regarding the implementation of the tripartite ‘Tiprasa Agreement’.
The agreement was signed in New Delhi on March 2 last year for the all-round socio-economic development of the indigenous tribal communities of the state.
When asked by journalists, the Chief Minister on Saturday had said that they discussed the progress of implementation of the tripartite agreement, which was signed in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Chief Minister himself.
TMP founder and chief Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, without elaborating on the discussions, said the meeting was “very positive” and cooperation between his party and the BJP for the welfare of tribal people would continue.
Another BJP leader said that since the politically important Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections are due early next year, party leaders have been asked to assess the organizational strength at the booth level in all tribal-inhabited areas.
He said the BJP has already appointed party observers for all the 28 TTAADC seats.
With the politically crucial TTAADC elections approaching, both the BJP and its allies, the TMP and the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), are working separately to strengthen their influence among the tribal communities.
Both TMP and IPFT are tribal-based parties.
The TMP, led by former royal scion Debbarma, is ruling the 30-member (28 elected through elections and two nominated by the Governor) TTAADC from 2021.
The tribal autonomous body manages about two-thirds of the state’s 10,491 sq km area and is home to more than 12.16 lakh people, about 84 per cent of whom are tribals.
Tribals make up about a third of Tripura’s 40 lakh population and play an important role in the state’s electoral politics.
Out of total 60 assembly seats, 20 are reserved for tribals.
