New Delhi, Nov 8 (IANS) Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday held a campaign rally in support of BJP candidate Mr Harjit Singh Sandhu, who is contesting the Tarn Taran assembly by-election in Punjab, and criticized AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal for the farm debt and poor law and order situation in the state.
Addressing a huge public meeting, he urged people to vote for the party’s candidate in the November 11 by-election.
Referring to the deteriorating situation in Punjab, where incidents of murder, extortion, land grabbing and looting are taking place continuously, CM Gupta Minister said that everyone knows who is responsible for this deterioration.
He saw that the state which once fed the entire country was now struggling with the menace of drugs. Almost every home is affected, mothers’ eyes are full of tears and the future of the youth is looking bleak.
The Chief Minister said this dire situation is a result of the failed policies of the Kejriwal-controlled Punjab government, which had promised a “war on drugs” but instead protected the system that sustains it.
He questioned why the condition of Punjab has become so bad and why the state has been pushed into such huge debt.
In her address, the Delhi Chief Minister highlighted the development model of the central government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the achievements of the BJP government in Delhi through its welfare-oriented policies. He said that this by-election is not just about one seat but about deciding the direction of Punjab’s future and development.
The Delhi Chief Minister’s visit mainly focused on strengthening the party organization in Punjab, finalizing upcoming political strategies and garnering support for the party candidate in Tarn Taran.
He began his journey by offering prayers at the Darbar Sahib in Tarn Taran, praying for peace, harmony and prosperity for the state.
Later, he visited Thakurdwara temple and interacted with devotees. Delhi Cabinet Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa also accompanied him during the visit.
Addressing the rally, the Chief Minister expressed happiness on visiting the holy land of Tarn Taran blessed by Guru Arjun Dev Ji. He emphasized that the relationship between Punjab and Delhi is not just geographical but deeply cultural, social and emotional. He said that the people of Punjab have played an important role in the development and progress of Delhi.
“Governments come and go, but the burden of debt remains on the shoulders of the people,” he said.
He accused the Kejriwal government of launching a “land pooling” scheme to grab people’s land, which had to be withdrawn after public outcry.
Now, he said, the government is selling public land. “When no new roads, bridges or colleges were built, where did all the money go?” he asked.
CM Gupta said that the money has been wasted on hooliganism, corruption and luxurious lifestyle of selfish leaders.
He said that just as the Kejriwal government misused public funds in Delhi, the same pattern is now being repeated in Punjab, where people’s hard-earned money is being spent on personal extravagance.
He questioned who has the authority to be the Chief Minister of Punjab when major administrative decisions are decided by leaders sitting in Delhi. “What connection does Kejriwal have with Punjab?” he asked.
“He lives in a government bungalow here and uses public money to convert it into a ‘sheeshmahal’, as he did in Delhi.”
