Panna/Bhopal, Nov 7 (IANS) In a stroke of luck that has sparked excitement in Madhya Pradesh’s diamond sector, Brijendra Kumar Sharma, a resident of Sirswaha village in Panna district, has unearthed five different diamonds from the Bharkan mine area – a promising start in his mining journey.

Sharma, who recently secured his first mining permit for shallow drilling in June this year, figuratively struck gold – when his modest efforts yielded a total of 5.79 carats of rough diamonds: a 0.74-carat, a 2.29-carat, a 0.77-carat (all brilliant), a 1.08-carat and a 0.91-carat (uncoloured). Diamond.

Experts estimate that the combined value of the stones could range from a minimum of Rs 5 lakh to a maximum of Rs 12 lakh, depending on clarity, color and market demand. The discovery has not only brought joy to Sharma’s family, but also given hope to local miners, who often face harsh conditions in search of the elusive glint beneath the emerald soil.

The Bharkan mines, part of the famous Panna Diamond Reserve, have long been a source of livelihood and dream for hundreds of small-scale miners. While large-scale commercial operations grab the headlines, it is stories like Sharma’s perseverance, patience and providence that reflect the spirit of grassroots mining in the region.

Mineral Resources Department officials confirmed the discovery and appreciated Sharma’s adherence to legal mining procedures. A senior official said, “This is a great example of responsible mining. We encourage more locals to apply for permits and explore opportunities in a regulated manner.”

Their discovery underscores the potential of shallow mining permits, which are typically granted to individuals or small groups for limited digging, often with rudimentary equipment and minimal investment, an Emerald official said.

Speaking to local officials, Sharma expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and shared his surprise at the discovery. Smiling proudly, he said, “I never thought my first attempt would be so rewarding. It’s a blessing.”

The diamonds have since been deposited at the district diamond office, where they will be appraised and auctioned as per government protocol. As diamonds await their fate under the auctioneer’s hammer, the story of Kailash Sharma has enthralled Sirswaha and beyond.

Just a few days ago, Panna Tiger Reserve tour guide Kailash pursued his keen interest while working on a modest plot of 8×8 strip of sun-baked clay at the Krishna Kalyanpur Pati diamond mine. Amidst the gravel, two stones glittered with promise. Although a leading diamond appraiser said their quality was inferior to the five better gems recently discovered by Brijendra, the upcoming auction is expected to fetch a higher yield than anticipated.
